Fizzies Drink Tablets

fizziesDescription: Flavored tablets that when added to a glass of water, create a soft drink.

History: Fizzies were created in the 1950's at the Emerson Drug Company. The chemists at the company wanted to create a tablet that could be placed into a glass of tap water to create a soda pop-like beverage. The actual Fizzies tablet recipe has undergone several changes through the years, as newer and more advanced sweetenders have entered the market. At one point, Fizzies tablets did not have any sweetener at all! Whenever you canted to enjoy your Fizzies, the recipe called for the addition of 1 teaspoon of sugar to sweeten the beverage. Fizzies dissappeared from the public for several years, but as of 2006, Fizzies are back on the market.

Flavors: Sour Apple Fizzies, Blue Razz Fizzies, Cherry Fizzies, Fruit Punch Fizzies, Lemon Lime Fizzies, Orange Fizzies, Rootbeer Fizzies, Drink Mate Hangover Defense Fizz

Packaging: Cardboard Box, 8 Fizzies tablets per box

Interesting Fact: Each Fizzies tablet has 100% the daily value of Vitamin C and is calorie free

Trivia: In the movie, "National Lampoon's Animal House," Dean Wormer mentions that along with other pranks, the Delta House has dumped an entire truckload of Fizzies into a swimming pool during a swim meet.

Guinea Pig Writer Says: I dropped my first ever fizzy into a glass of room temperature tap water, not really knowing what to expect. From the moment the cherry tablet went into the water, bubbles began to stream out. I was a bit surprised by the amount of bubbles actually. The water immediately turned a bright red and I caught a strong smell of cherries. After about 45 seconds, the bubbles let up slightly. The Fizzies tablet, now about half its original size, floated to the surface of the glass. By the two minute mark, the tablet was beginning to break apart, leaving me with a glass of red colored beverage. I never needed to stir the tablet.

The first sip of Fizzies struck me as tangy, slightly acidic, and not overpowering or too sugary. The Fizzies gave the beverage an average cherry flavor - not as strong as a cherry soda pop, but not as watery as your average flavored water-vitamin drink. The taste is pretty similar to adding a drink powder to a glass of water. There was not a lot of carbonation, even with all the bubbles during the "fizzing".

Safety: And for safety sake, I subjected myself to one of the Fizzies in the mouth. Expecting the worst, I was surprised to find very little bubbling at all. In fact, trying to instigate a bigger reaction, I then took a mouthfull of water. Still very little noticeable effect. The flavor was pretty strong, but still, the sensation was not even close to a candy such as pop rocks.

Final Verdict: The Fizzies beverage's taste is average, but the true attraction is the Fizzies' bubbly reaction when combined with water. Anyone who has never experienced the reaction of aFizzies and water needs to try this at least once. I would expect most kids to have a great time with these candies. At zero calories, and having a full daily supply of Vitamin C, Fizzies are truly a guiltless pleasure.
