Milkshake & Butternut Bars

Hey guys and gals, we get quite a few people asking us for their childhood favorites - Milkshake and Butternut candy bars. Well, we have the unfortunate job of telling everyone that Milkshake and Butternut bars have been discontinued for several decades now. There is no one out there producing them. And the only ones left will be inedible antiques that have been on a shelf for over 20 years.
Milkshakes and Butternuts were first produced by the original Hollywood Candy company in Centralia, Illinois. The company was founded in 1912 and began producing a wide range of candy bars including the Butternut, Milk Shake, Zero, Pay Day, and Hollywood Candy Bars.
Beginning in the 1960's Hollywood Candy's product line went through several owners, eventually ending up in the hands of the Hershey Company in 1996. Based on this information, it could be concluded that the Hershey company maintains the rights to all of Hollywood Candy's product line. As of right now, Hershey only produces the Zero and Pay Day candy bars.
We have tried contacting the Hershey company for more information on the topic and the customer care representatives had no knowledge of Milkshake Bars or Butternut Bars. Further searching of their computer system did not turn up any information either. It would appear that without extensive legal prying, it will be difficult to determine whether or not Hershey's retains ownership of the candy bars, or even their recipes.
Unfortunately our store is related to the original Hollywood Candy company in name only. We do not produce any of their original candies, and we do not sell any of their products, save Hershey's Pay Days and Zero bars.
We do produce a small line of our own chocolates, but nothing on an industrial scale. Maybe one day we'll have a try at making something similar to the Milkshake or Butternut bar - stay tuned...
